“Es un buen tipo mi viejo”.
Zenobio, our Papá, was a simple man, a worker, a family man, a willful man. He was a fighter, a stroke survivor and who against many other challenges lived a long life of 95 years. He was born in Volyn, Ukraine. In the mid 1930s, as a young boy, he and his parents emigrated to Paraguay. . He became an apprentice learning the craft of a shoemaker, or cobbler. Around 1949, Papá moved to Argentina and began a new life with his love Elena, Mamá. Shortly after, they had their first two children and over the years, a total of 4. After many years, Papá’s brothers and widowed mother moved to the United States. Then, Papá also went alone to Chicago for half a year to work. In 1972, he moved most of his family to Chicago. His eldest son joined the family a year after. Papá worked as a machinist until he retired. He learned to drive here and enjoyed working on cars. He enjoyed hanging out with his brother(s), family friends, having picnics by the lake and grilling (“asado”).Papá was a gentleman, never letting Mamá out of his sight whenever they went out. Even at 91 years old before she passed away, he opened doors for her and stayed at her bedside until her last breath. Once he retired, he enjoyed going on road trips throughout the USA, reading newspapers, especially news about world affairs. He was knowledgeable about different countries and governments. And of course he enjoyed becoming a Grandfather (Dido) to 5 beautiful grandkids! Our family gatherings and celebrations happened frequently as our family was extended through friendships and marriages. And when health was not at our father’s side, we still enjoyed talking to him, drinking maté and sharing photos especially this year when two grandchildren got married! Our last weekend with him was a pleasure: Laura’s birthday, Giselle’s visit, and watching movies at night. May this be our final but happy memory of our father. May his memory be eternal.
