Vitantonio 'Tony' Berardi

February 2, 1933 — January 25, 2026

Mt Prospect

Vitantonio “Tony” Berardi, a man of profound character, tireless work ethic, and a legendary heart, passed away peacefully at the age of 92. In a final act of devotion, Tony was reunited with his beloved wife, Maria “Nina,” on January 25th—what would have been their 59th wedding anniversary.

Born in the coastal town of Mola di Bari in Puglia, Italy, Tony’s life was shaped by the rhythm of the sea. A curious child with an early calling to his family’s trade, he decided after the fourth grade he had to prioritize the family needs. He began tagging along with his uncles and grandfather, eventually becoming a full-time fisherman.

His maritime journey was interrupted only by his service in the Italian Navy (1956–1958). Upon his return, he traversed the Adriatic Sea and the Suez Canal, traveling as far as Egypt. It was on these boats that Tony discovered his passion for cooking, serving as the onboard chef and ensuring his crew was always well-fed—a role he would reprise for his family for the rest of his life.

In 1965, Tony traveled to the United States to visit his parents and immediately fell in love with the American Dream. He knew his future lay across the Atlantic, but not before returning to Italy to find the love of his life. Tony met Nina in early December 1966; their connection was so undeniable that they were engaged by Christmas and married just one month later.

In April 1967, the newlyweds moved to Chicago to build their life. Tony began his American career at Brach’s Candy before landing an opportunity working in construction. He spent over 20 years as a dedicated laborer, retiring from Pepper Construction in 1995.

Tony lived simply, but his life was rich in the things that mattered. He was a man of traditional beliefs who took immense pride in his family. To know Tony was to know a man of fierce loyalty and honesty. He was happiest when sharing a good meal, a glass of his homemade wine, or performing one of his famous magic tricks for friends and family.

He lived his life to the fullest until the very end, carrying nearly 93 years of wisdom and stories with him. He was truly a man like no other.

To all his family and friends - it’s time to say, Arrivederci.

Tony is survived by his son, Nino (Rosa) Berardi, daughter Anna (Joe) Zavala; grandchildren Stephanie, Anthony, Sara, Matteo, and Nico; siblings Giovanna (the late Pietro), Francesca (Dennis) Mazurek, Grazia (the late Vincenzo) Leopardi, and John (Marlene) Berardi; many nieces and nephews.
