Roy Dean Bates, Sr., age 80, of Rosemont, Illinois, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025. Born in Licking, Missouri, Roy lived a full and loving life devoted to family, hard work, and laughter.
Beloved husband of Betty Ann (née Fellows) for 61 wonderful years. Loving father of Roy D. Bates, Jr., Donna Marie Bates, and the late Debra Ann Lonski. Cherished brother of Albert Ray (Joan) Bates, and brother-in-law to many. He was a proud father-in-law to Robert Lonski, Sr.
Roy was a devoted grandfather to Michael Lonski, James Dean Lonski, Robert Lonski, Jr., and Jessica Kozak, and a loving great-grandfather to Arabella Rose Lonski and Michael McIntyre. He will also be remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and numerous caring friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mary Bates, and his siblings Edward Bates, Edna Smith, Robert Bates, Marie York, Louise Walker, Charles Bates, Virginia Rieder, Wayne Bates, and Gary Bates, along with their spouses.
Roy dedicated 33 years of service to the United States Postal Service in Des Plaines, where he was affectionately known as “Bingo” by his coworkers and friends. Known for his good humor and kindness, he was deeply respected by those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A lifelong Chicago sports fan, Roy loved cheering on the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Cubs. He also enjoyed spending time with family, visiting the casino or local bingo hall, and sharing laughter with those he loved most.
Roy’s legacy of warmth, dedication, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of a 12:00 noon funeral service at Cumberland Chapels 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge, IL. We will then proceed for the interment at All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Des Plaines, IL. For more information call (708)456-8300.
