Joseph Piazza

“Terrific!” That was the catchphrase of Joseph Piazza and the perfect word to describe his lifetime of achievement and his commitment to family. Born on November 25 ^th , 1926 to Joseph and Angelina, he left high school as soon as he turned eighteen to join the Army, where he served as a tech sergeant. Although he never saw combat, he managed a warehouse in Hiroshima before returning to Chicago and marrying Phyllis, who would be by his side for over seventy-four years. His career spanned decades of selling advertising space through Reuben H. Donnelly, the first official Yellow Pages directory. He was a longstanding lector of Mary Seat of Wisdom for many years, and his favorite pastimes were playing card games with his friends, gathering with his family, and the occasional trip to the casino, where his philosophy was, “Never gamble what you aren’t willing to lose.” He passed away on Friday, January 26 at the age of ninety-seven surrounded by family in his home. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, his pleasant attitude, and his love for his wife, his children, his heritage and community. Joseph is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his daughters Terese McGrath (James), Paulette Ryg (Gary), Mary Toyama (Robert) and Angela Brittsan (Brian). He was blessed by forty-two grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He had a fruitful life, was loved dearly and will be missed greatly. Visitation Wednesday, January 31 ^st from 10:00 A.M to 12 Noon at Cumberland Chapels (FRIEL FUNERAL DIRECTORS) 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge. Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday 12 Noon.
