John Massari (aka Poppy) passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 4, 2024. He enjoyed 88 healthy years. He leaves behind family and so many friends who loved him dearly. John is survived by his sons, James (Deborah), Michael (Mary), and John (Michele), four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, several step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He will be reunited with his wife of 51 years, Dorothy.
John worked for school district 64 in Park Ridge in the maintenance department, where he spent 25 years until he retired in 2004. He lived a great, healthy life after his retirement, always to be seen out and about with Dewars in hand at his favorite restaurant, The Great Escape. You could almost set your watch to his nightly arrival where he drank with his many friends and patrons there. John and Dorothy always found time in their lives to take care of family and friends, nieces, and nephews, making sure everyone had a roof over their heads, a hot meal on the table and a place to go for all the holidays. He spent his summers in Fargo, North Dakota for the last 20 years helping his son at the company where he served as maintenance man, cook, head dishwasher and official greeter. He was known by all as “Poppy.” He started spending the winter months in Cabo San Lucas where he was loved by many. Visitors from all over the world knew that when they walked into Bar Esquina they could count on him to be in his favorite seat with a smile on his face and a friendly hello. He never missed a night there as well. He touched so many people in his life and he had an uncanny ability to find happiness in everything he did. His infectious personality was contagious to everyone he met. He will be missed by so many. He truly did it his way.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, February 18, 2024 from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Monday, February 19, 2024 from 10:00 am until time of the funeral service at 11:00 am at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W. Lawrence Ave. Norridge, IL. Entombment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL.
