John B. Gardner, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on August 29, 2025.
John was the devoted Life Partner of Marie Shalzi, and the proud Stepfather of Sabrina and Grant Shalzi, as well as Jonathan and the late Robert Kulikowski, and Kristina Newcomb. He was the cherished son of the late Elizabeth and Donald Gard
ner, and the loving brother of Anne and Tom Gardner. John was also a dear nephew, cousin, and friend to many who were touched by his warmth, generosity and bright spirit.
Born and raised in the Chicagoland area, John spent most of his life in the city he loved. He carried with him a lifelong passion for the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, and he found joy in exploring the different ways the city has evolved with his family, always eager to share in new experiences and make memories.
A proud alumnus of the University of Colorado Boulder, John was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, where he formed lasting friendships. He was also deeply involved with Red Arrow Camp for Boys in Woodruff, Wisconsin, an institution that reflected his dedication to mentorship, community, and the development of young people.
John’s life was defined by his commitment to taking care of his family, his loyalty to his friends, and the joy he felt in bringing those closest to him together. His legacy lives on in those whose lives he touched as well as the various organizations he supported through his charitable work. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him to live with kindness, generosity, and a sense of adventure.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 8:30–10:00 a.m. at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge, IL. A service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Glenview Community Church, 1000 Elm St., Glenview, IL. Entombment will take place at All Saints Mausoleum in Des Plaines.
