Joan Curran

Joan Curran (nee Lenihan), beloved wife, sister, aunt, and dear friend, passed away peacefully with her loving husband, Dermot at her bedside, in Chicago, Illinois, on May 15th, 2026, at the age of 84.

Born in St. Catherine's Hospital in Tralee, Ireland, Joan emigrated to the United States in 1959 in search of a better life, carrying with her a deep Catholic faith, strong Irish spirit, and unwavering devotion to family. Though Chicago became her home, Ireland always remained in her heart. She treasured her Irish roots, and the memories of home she carried throughout her life.

Joan is survived by her husband, Dermot. They were married for 57 years and they shared a beautiful life together. She is also survived by her siblings Brige (in England), Dennis (in Chicago, Illinois), Mary (in Kildare, Ireland), and Theresa (in Monahan, Ireland) along with many nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones who will miss her deeply. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack Lenihan and Catherine Lenihan (nee Harrington), and her siblings Kitty, Sheila, Nora, Michael, Margaret, and Baby John.

May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace. She had a favorite Irish Blessing that she loved that she kept on her couch:

“May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back,

May the sun shine warm upon your face

And the rains fall soft upon your fields

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

Memorial Visitation for Joan will take place on Friday, May 22, 2026 from 10:00 am until time of Memorial Mass at 11:00 am at St. Monica Church 5136 N Nottingham Ave, Chicago, IL 60656.
