James Voss

August 8, 1941 — June 3, 2026

James W. "Jim" Voss — beloved husband of Debbie Voss; loving father of Tracy Voss, Melissa Voss, Jeremy Andersen-Voss (Cherisse), James Voss II, and Julia Voss (Sean); fond grandfather of Jeremy Andersen-Voss, Gavin Andersen-Voss, James Neville, Taylor Neville, and Kassidy Neville; beloved son of the late Fred and Elinor Voss; dear brother of Barbara Strother, Shirley Schwann (Don), Joseph Voss (Dawn), and the late Jean Voss (Kathy), Fred Voss (Kay), Carol Mustafa (Sam), and Patricia Monzella (Vince); and a fond uncle and friend to many — passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved beyond measure.

He was 84 years old. Born on August 8, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, to Fred and Elinor Voss, Jim lived a life defined by faith, hard work, generosity, and love. A man of deep Christian faith, he sought to live a life with purpose, integrity, and compassion, carrying those values into the way he worked, served, and loved others. To know Jim was to know someone who genuinely cared. He had a rare gift for making people feel valued and important. Whether speaking with family, friends, neighbors, customers, or someone he had just met, Jim had a way of making people feel seen. He shared his wisdom freely, offered encouragement when it was needed most, and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. His warmth, humor, strength, and unforgettable presence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.Above all else, Jim’s greatest love was his family. He shared 36 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Debbie, building a life rooted in faith, loyalty, laughter, and unconditional love. He was a devoted husband, proud father, and loving grandfather whose greatest joy came from the people he loved. No matter what he accomplished in life, his family was always what mattered most.A true entrepreneur, Jim built successful businesses in the HVAC, construction, wholesale, and real estate industries through determination, vision, and an unmatched work ethic. Entirely self-made, he spent his life creating opportunities not only for himself, but for others as well. Through honesty, fairness, and hard work, he earned the respect of countless people wherever he went.Yet despite his accomplishments, Jim never measured success by money or possessions. He measured it by the people he loved, the friendships he treasured, and the lives he was able to touch.Jim had a deep curiosity about the world and a lifelong love of history and space. He was fascinated by the universe above him and the stories of the world around him. He loved learning, collecting, exploring, and sharing what he knew. He traveled the world, but no destination held a more special place in his heart than Rome, Italy. Rome was the setting of one of the most treasured experiences of his life—a journey he shared with his beloved mother, Elinor. The memories they made there remained close to his heart and reflected the deep bond they shared. An avid collector of coins, antiques, books, and paintings, Jim loved preserving pieces of the past and uncovering the stories behind them. Whether talking about history, business, faith, family, space, or life itself, he had a way of making ordinary conversations unforgettable.Among Jim’s proudest achievements was his lifelong dedication to Freemasonry. A 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago, he served as Worshipful Master of Hesperia Lodge No. 411 and devoted himself to the principles of brotherhood, charity, leadership, and service. One of his greatest sources of pride was sharing that Masonic journey with his sons. Alongside his son, James Voss II, he became part of a rare father-and-son legacy of Worshipful Masters, while his son Jeremy Andersen-Voss, also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, shared in that same brotherhood. Jim also served on the Grand Lodge of Illinois Masonic Charities Committee and was a proud member of the Medinah Shriners, supporting the mission of Shriners Children’s and its life-changing care for children and families. Those who knew Jim will remember his wisdom, generosity, humor, and willingness to help others. They will remember his stories, his advice, his love of learning, and the way he made people feel. He worked hard, loved deeply, gave freely, and lived fully. While our hearts are broken by his passing, we take comfort in knowing that Jim’s life was full of love, family, and joy. His legacy lives on in the family he adored, the friendships he treasured, the businesses he built, the values he instilled, and the faith, kindness, and generosity he shared so freely. He taught us how to work hard, how to lead with integrity, how to care for others, and how to live with purpose. Most of all, he taught us that family is life’s greatest blessing and that love is the truest measure of a life well lived.
