Gary Nelson

Gary A. Nelson 79 of Des Plaines at rest Tuesday, October 29, 2024. Veteran of the United States Coast Guard. Gary was born in Chicago and raised on Washington Island, Wisconsin, where a piece of his heart still remains. He joined the Coast Guard right after high school and always had an affinity and respect for the military. Gary met the love of his life, Tommi, when he needed to “fix” her phone at work. They were married shortly after and had a wonderful 44 years together where they created so many wonderful memories with family and friends.

When you think of Gary, some of the things you think of include chocolate, watching the Green Bay Packers and Cubs, planes, outer space and playing with his grandsons. Gary was always young at heart, skiing and surfing for the first time in his 50’s and 60’s. He is the beloved husband  of Tommi. Loving father of Brittney Nelson – Ranieri ( Ben Ranieri) and the late Joseph . Beloved son of the late Carl and the late Olive.  Cherished grandfather of Ian and Luca. Dear brother of the late Bruce (the late Jerry), the late Dale (Linda) Nelson. Fond brother in law of Jody Siek-Gorgacakis (John), Uncle of Justin (Ali), Jarrod (Kris), Jenna (Matt) and the late Jason (Rachael). Great uncle of Cheydon, Everett, Mila, Declan, Lidia, Gavin, Blake, Griffin, Milo and Sofia. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 3 ^rd from 12 Noon to 4:00 P.M. at Cumberland Chapels (FRIEL FUNERAL DIRECTORS) 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge Interment Private.Gary made an impression on everyone he met with his kind and gentle nature and he will be greatly missed. We couldn’t have asked for a better husband, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, brother, brother-in-law, neighbor and friend. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association or the National Cancer Society. You are asked to join Gary's family for dinner at Cucinia Biagio Restaurant. after the visitation.
