Fernando Contreras Dominguez

Fernando "Fer" Contreras Domínguez, age 63, passed away unexpectedly on March 8, 2025, with his family at his side. Fernando was the beloved husband of Juana Escobar Sánchez for 38 wonderful years; loving father of Daisy and Maria Fernanda; loving father-in-law to Hernan; dear son of Bertha and the late Fulgencio; dearest brother of Yolanda, Sergio, Mario, Josefina “Chepina,” Roberto, Gustavo, Marisela, and Luisa; and he was a fond uncle of many. He was preceded in death by his father Fulgencio and nephew Pancho. Fer loved his feline companions Paquita, Miel, Frijol, and Benito.

Fer was born in Rinconada, Veracruz where he grew up helping his parents tend to the family business selling “antojitos” and other street snacks. He picked up his passion for cooking from his sisters and mom who created these recipes. His unique touch to regional cuisines – like homemade tamales with hoja de platano, mole, garnachas, milanesas, caldo de camarón, and many others – will never be replicated or forgotten.

Fer moved to Mexico City when he was 17 years old in search of economic opportunities and higher education. He met his wife Juana while working at the same company and they got married in 1986. After the birth of their two daughters, the family of four moved to the United States and settled in Chicago’s West Ridge neighborhood, joining brother-in-law Delfino and his wife Remedios, and godson Mario. For most of his working life in the U.S. – nearly 30 years – Fer worked as a custodian cleaning offices and schools. He dedicated his life to his family, often working multiple jobs to get his daughters through college and offering his wisdom during life’s hardest moments.

Fer was meticulous, fashionable, funny, inquisitive, and a lover of dance and music – from disco, Motown, to tropical salsa. He loved being outside in nature, working with his hands in the garden which reminded him of his childhood playing by the riverbanks with his siblings. Fer was often outside his house raking leaves, mowing the lawn, and watching the family of cardinals that took residence in the backyard. When it was time to go to work, Fer loved wearing his best dress shoes, pressed pants, and dress shirt with one of his many pullover sweaters. He took great pride in looking his best even while doing a physically demanding job.

His sweet and quiet demeanor will always be in the hearts of his family.

Visitation Wednesday, March 12, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge, IL. All services will conclude at 8:00 p.m. and the interment will be private. For more information call (708) 456-8300.

Fernando "Fer" Contreras Domínguez, de 63 años, falleció inesperadamente el 8 de marzo de 2025, con su familia a su lado. Fernando fue el amado esposo de Juana Escobar Sánchez durante 38 maravillosos años; padre amoroso de Daisy y María Fernanda; suegro amoroso de Hernán; querido hijo de Bertha y el difunto Fulgencio; hermano querido de Yolanda, Sergio, Mario, Josefina "Chepina", Roberto, Gustavo, Marisela y Luisa; y fue un tío cariñoso para muchos. Le precedieron en la muerte su padre Fulgencio y su sobrino Pancho. Fer amaba a sus compañeros felinos Paquita, Miel, Frijol y Benito.

Fer nació en Rinconada, Veracruz, donde creció ayudando a sus padres a atender el negocio familiar de venta de antojitos y otros bocadillos callejeros. Adquirió su pasión por la cocina y la comida de sus hermanas y su madre, quienes crearon estas recetas. Su toque único en la cocina, como los tamales caseros con hoja de plátano, mole, garnachas, milanesas, caldo de camarón y muchos otros, nunca será replicado ni olvidado.

Fer se mudó a la Ciudad de México cuando tenía 17 años en busca de oportunidades económicas y educación superior. Conoció a su esposa Juana mientras trabajaban en la misma empresa y se casaron en 1986. Después del nacimiento de sus dos hijas, la familia de cuatro se mudó a los Estados Unidos y se estableció en el vecindario West Ridge de Chicago, uniéndose a su cuñado Delfino y su esposa Remedios, y a su ahijado Mario. Durante la mayor parte de su vida laboral en los EE. UU., casi 30 años, trabajó como conserje limpiando oficinas y escuelas. Fer dedicó su vida a su familia, a menudo trabajando múltiples empleos al día para ayudar a sus hijas terminar la universidad y ofreciendo su sabiduría durante los momentos más difíciles de la vida.

Fer era meticuloso, a la moda, divertido, curioso, amante del baile y la música, desde la música disco, Motown, y la salsa tropical. Le encantaba estar al aire libre en la naturaleza, trabajando con sus manos en el jardín, recordando su infancia jugando en las orillas del río con sus hermanos. Fer solía estar fuera de su casa rastrillando hojas, cortando el césped y observando a la familia de cardenales que vivían en el patio trasero. Cuando llegaba el momento de ir a trabajar, a Fer le encantaba usar sus mejores zapatos de vestir, pantalones planchados y camisa de vestir con uno de sus muchos suéteres. Se enorgullecía de lucir lo mejor posible incluso mientras realizaba un trabajo físicamente exigente.

Su comportamiento dulce y tranquilo siempre estará en los corazones de su familia.
