Edward A. Gonke

Edward A. Gonke, 84, passed away on September 26, 2026, leaving behind a family who will deeply miss his unmistakable presence.

Edward was the beloved husband of Lucy Gonke, his partner in life for 63 wonderful years. Their marriage was the foundation of the family they built together and a partnership that endured through every season of life. He was the loving father of Anthony (La’Trice) Gonke and Annie (Joseph) Capotosto; cherished grandfather of Ashley (Jeremy) Mintun, Nicole (Casey) Pourchot, and Devin Torkelsen; and proud great-grandfather of Emilia, Elijah, and Colter.

Edward was the beloved son of the late Edward and Anne Gonke and dear brother of the late Robert (Barbara) Gonke. He was also a fond uncle to many.

A proud and hardworking man, Edward spent many years alongside his father and brother at the family business, A & G Saw & Tool Service on Belmont Avenue in Chicago. He was a man of strong opinions, high standards, sharp wit, and an unforgettable personality. He could be stubborn, he was rarely shy about saying exactly what he thought, and those who knew him well wouldn't have expected him to be any other way.

Edward had a deep appreciation for things done well and took great pride in caring for his home and gardens. Gifted with an impressive green thumb, he spent countless hours over the years growing vegetables and flowers. His gardens were a source of both enjoyment and pride, and he was always happiest when there was something to tend, grow, improve, or perfect.

But the greatest source of pride in Edward's life was his family. He treasured the life he and Lucy created together and took great joy in watching their family grow from children, to grandchildren, and eventually great-grandchildren. He remained deeply invested in the lives of those around him and was happiest knowing his family was close.

Edward will be remembered for his strength, his work ethic, his humor, his beautiful gardens, his unmistakable opinions, and the presence he brought to every family gathering. His influence can be seen in the generations that follow him, and his memory will remain an important part of the family he spent a lifetime building.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 1, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home and will proceed to St. Eugene Catholic Church in Chicago for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Entombment will follow at All Saints Mausoleum.
