*****All Services to be held at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St., Chicago, IL .***** Edward W. Brophy Jr., 70, served Chicago Society and Royalty as Premier Event Planner. Edward left us July 23, 2012 for glory in the next world after a valiant struggle with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). Born April 4, 1942 to Edward and Catherine (Clyne) Brophy and was originally trained as an architect at Notre Dame University before entering the world of event planning by chance. With his late wife Patricia (Radigan), together they started a small catering firm called The Silver Platter for extra income. Soon Ed found his true calling in life and through a progression of positions with Gapers, George Jewell LTD, and finally Callahan Inc. he rose to become a de facto leader on the Chicago party scene. With events like the Field Museum's Columbian Ball, the 1996 DNC convention and so many others, Ed made entertaining thousands at a time seem so easy. His clients included the Pritzker, Crown, Field and Wirtz families along with so many others who made our city great. His proudest moment though was being asked to serve the late Princess Margaret on her visit to Chicago during the late 1970s. The catering/event planning industry lost a giant this week and the city lost a bit of its history as well. Ed is survived by brother Tim (Gayle), numerous nieces and nephews, two grandsons as well as his children Kelly Pritchard (John) of Houston, TX and Tim of Palm Springs, CA. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the ALS Foundation, 5550 W. Touhy Ave., Suite 302, Skokie, IL 60077-3254 www.alsa.org. Visitation Wednesday July 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Holy Name Cathedral with prayers by Francis Cardinal George followed by High Mass on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Cathedral. Arrangements by Cumberland Chapel, 708.456.3410.
