Donald Versen Sr., of Des Plaines, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 24th, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Joan (nee Berg) and proud father of Donald Versen Jr. (Theresa), Susan Ropski (John), William Versen (Carolyn) and Maureen Moloney (James). He was the cherished grandfather of Samantha Ropski, Alexandria Malusa (John), Miranda Ropski, Erik Versen, Danielle Versen, Cassidy Versen, Michael Versen, and James Moloney.
Born to Vincent and Stella Versen, Donald built a life defined by hard work, service, and generosity. From his early days at Colonial Bank & Trust through his leadership roles at Bank of Commerce & Industry, Cosmopolitan National Bank, Columbia National Bank, LaSalle Bank, and Labe Bank, Donald dedicated more than five decades to the banking industry. He later served as Vice Chairman and CEO of LDF, Inc. and continued as a director and consultant for Suburban Bank & Trust. His steady leadership helped shape Chicago’s financial community, guiding institutions through periods of growth, challenge, and change.
Donald’s accomplishments extended far beyond the boardroom. He gave tirelessly to civic and charitable causes, including the Dr. William Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, Resurrection Health Care, the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association, and countless Polish-American (PRCU) cultural and philanthropic organizations. His leadership was recognized at the city, state, and even national level, where he advised public officials and participated in White House roundtables on economic development and international partnerships.
Despite his many professional and civic commitments, Donald’s greatest pride was always his family. He and Joan shared a lifetime of love, and together they instilled in their children the values of faith, integrity, and service to others. Donald was a devoted husband, father, mentor, and friend whose wisdom, humor, and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him.
Donald leaves behind a legacy of leadership, generosity, and devotion—both to his community and, most of all, to his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
