In loving memory of Christine “Chris” (Pacana) Karnes, who left us on January 4, 2026.
Chris was a kind, caring, and generous soul who always looked for ways to help others. She faced life’s challenges with strength, courage, and dignity, and her warmth, intelligence, and unique sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and someone who wore many hats throughout her life.
A homebody at heart and a night owl by nature, Chris found joy in simple, meaningful moments. She loved being in her backyard with her dogs, tending to her garden, and spending quiet hours crocheting. She had a sharp mind, remarkable memory, and quick wit. Those who knew her well also knew she never missed an episode of Law & Order, her favorite TV show. Gift giving was her love language, and she delighted in sending cards and small, thoughtful presents to bring joy to those she loved. Even after life, she continued her giving nature by offering herself as an organ donor, giving someone the gift of sight through her corneas.
Chris is survived by her husband of 54 years, Malvin Karnes; her daughters Jennifer (Kevin) Neidy Karnes and Deanna (Leo) Sanches da Silva; her brother-in-law John Hinterhauser; her nieces Melissa Hinterhauser and Kristin (Jason) Sander; and her beloved pets, Emma and GiGi.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Jane (Grzelak) Pacana; and her sister, Victoria (Pacana) Hinterhauser.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chris’s memory to your local ASPCA shelter.
Mom, you will always be in our hearts. We will never forget you, and we love you so much.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a service at 2:00 p.m., at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W Lawrence Ave, Norridge.
