Bernice J. Mateja, age 88, passed away peacefully at her home on March 28, 2025. Bernice was the beloved wife of the late Eugene; loving mother of Cindy (Don) Lellish and Steve (the late Debbie) Mateja; cherished grandmother of Nicole (Brad) Volden, Courtney Kramer (Matt Jacobs), and Stephanie (Sean) Sloop; great-grandmother of Henry, Leo, and Olivia; dear daughter of the late Anna Stark and sister of the late Bob Stark. She was also a fond aunt of many.
Bernice, affectionately known as "Bee", Gran, and Great Gran, had a life filled with the things she loved most. Her passion for the Chicago Cubs was legendary, and she was never shy about showing her support for her beloved team. She loved gardening and had a desire to plant and nurture everything she could. She even made friends with the neighborhood squirrels! Bee had a particular fondness for bingo, enjoying her weekly games with friends, always bringing her signature fun and energy to each round. Later she shared the love of the game with her grandchildren, creating lasting memories of late nights of snacks and sleepovers full of laughter and love. But above all, Bee’s greatest joy was her family. She adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and they brought immense happiness to her life. Her home was a true reflection of her love for them, filled with colorful crafts, creations, and artwork from those she cherished most. A woman full of life, Bee's spunky, vibrant personality will always be remembered. She brought joy to everyone she met, and her legacy of warmth, humor, and love will never be forgotten.
Visitation Wednesday, April 2, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge, IL. All Services will conclude Wednesday evening, and the interment will be private. For more information call (708) 456-8300.
