Barbara Chalupnik (née Mickelsen), age 90, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, in Joliet, Illinois. Born to Russell and Frances Mickelsen on June 18, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, Barbara lived a full and spirited life marked by deep love for her family, unwavering loyalty to her friends, and an enduring passion for her beloved Chicago Cubs.
A proud graduate of Carl Schurz High School in Chicago, Barbara carried the values of hard work and community with her throughout her life. Her vibrant personality and outgoing nature made her a cherished friend to many. She had a gift for making others feel welcome and valued—traits that earned her lifelong friendships and the admiration of those fortunate enough to know her.
Barbara was the devoted mother of three sons: Steven, David, and Paul. Her love for them was boundless and ever-present. She found immense joy in being a grandmother to Danielle and Liam, whom she adored deeply. Her affection extended to all members of the family—including Max, her treasured grandfurbaby—who brought her endless smiles and companionship.
Besides her loving heart, Barbara was also known for one particularly unshakable allegiance: the Chicago Cubs. She bled Cubbie blue through every season—win or lose—and proudly wore her fandom like a badge of honor. Even when it sparked playful debates with her youngest son Paul, Barbara stood firm in the belief that “Mom is always right,” especially when it came to baseball.
Barbara’s warmth, humor, and steadfast spirit left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. She cherished the friendships forged with those at North Park Village and her legacy lives on in the laughter she inspired, the wisdom she shared, and the love she gave so freely.
