Ann Masterson
April 6, 1930 — January 8, 2024
Ann (Halloran) Masterson passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at her home. She was 93 years old.
Ann was born on April 6, 1930 in Rosmuc, County Galway, Ireland to Thomas Halloran and Ann (nee Hynes) Halloran. Ann, our Connemara Rose, lived in Rosmuc until she bravely immigrated to Chicago at the age of 19. Thanks to her strong faith, she stayed the course in America and laid her family’s foundation for generations to come.
Ann was the beloved wife of the late Martin Masterson, who held the rank of sergeant in the Chicago Police Department. She is survived by her eight children: Mary Jo (Douglas) Basler, Kathleen (James) Kandl, Eileen (Gerard) Heffernan, Martin (Carol) Masterson, Theresa Masterson, Margaret Masterson, Michael Masterson, and Bernadette (Fernando Carpaneda) Masterson.
She is also survived by her two dear sisters and best friends, the “Golden Girls” Sarah (the late Harry) Casey and Nora (the late Hugh) Masterson. She joins her cherished siblings in heaven: the late Mickey Halloran, the late Mary Conroy (the late Mickey), the late Barbara Nee (the late Martin), the late Coleman Halloran, and the late Paddy Halloran (the late Irene).
One of Ann’s most profound joys in life was being a grandparent. Ann was the treasured Grandma/Lala/Mamo of 18 grandchildren: Christopher, Thomas, Martin, Jennifer, John, Jessica, Kaleen, Jacqueline, Lauren, Ashleigh, Kelly, Siobhan, Caroline, Michael Patrick, Michael James, Michael Tolman, Joseph, and Brendan. Ann was also the doting and beloved great-grandmother to 16 great grandchildren.
Ann was the loving aunt to 50 nieces and nephews across the US, Ireland, England, Scotland, and Italy.
Ann was a prominent figure in Chicago’s Irish community. She was a founding member of both the Galway Fellowship Club and the Irish American Heritage Center of Chicago, and remained members of both until her passing. Ann was also a devout Catholic, and was an avid supporter of the Columban Fathers and St Patrick Fathers.
The Masterson family would like to extend a special thanks to Ann’s caregivers and companions, who accompanied her daily throughout her final years: Ann Dalton, Maggie McCormack, Xiomara Abarca, Catherine Kelly McCormack, Patricia Boyd, Margaret McShane, Evelyn Geronimo, Mary Butler, Mary Carroll, Lissette Abarca, Peggy O’Connor Carrillo, Justyna Korman, Bridie Boyle, Andrea Torres, Maribeth Ruehlmann, Peige Sullivan, and Maria Onofrej. The family would also like to thank Mark and Cathy Laduzinsky for being outstanding neighbors and friends to Ann over the years.
Visitation hours will be publicly held on Friday, January 19, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W. Lawrence Avenue, Norridge, IL 60706. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the funeral home and will then proceed for a funeral Mass 10:30 a.m at St. Francis Borgia Roman Catholic Church, 8033 W. Addison Street, Chicago, IL 60634. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove, IL.
