Chicago

Alice Zdunek (Opiela), 100 years young, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 17, 2026. Alice was the beloved wife of the late Chester; loving mother of Kenneth (Mary Memhardt) Zdunek; Joan Zawodniak and Alan (Teresita) Zdunek; dear daughter of the late Harriet and Jacob Opiela; cherished grandmother of Jeffrey (Amy Bailey), Evan (Kira) and Laura (Ryan Oestreich) Zdunek, Pete (Kasey) and Kevin (Wendy) Zawodniak, Kara (Noah) Miller, Maria (Matt Wood), David (Laura Mitrovic), Sara and Catherine Zdunek; proud great- grandmother of Ethan, Landon, Samuel, Amelia, Ava, Lily, Calvin, Benjamin, Margaret, Emma, Henry, Ruby and Oscar; dearest sister of the late Genevieve; dear cousin to Patricia Brabraj; fond aunt to Ray Socki, her Godson Jeffrey Peszek, and many other nieces and nephews.

Alice was born at her parents’ home on the Northwest side of Chicago during an intense Spring snowstorm. She attended Chicago public and Catholic schools, and as a young adult worked as a bookkeeper at Western Electric. Alice met her husband Chester at the “Thousand Braves” Polish-American fraternal organization. Always with love, she was a vigorous and supportive advocate of education with her children. She was perpetually concerned about the well-being of others and was a generous donor to many charities. Alice retired as a member of the Teamsters’ Central States office staff. Alice and Chester had many great domestic and international travel adventures together during retirement, including a memorable Cubs Spring training vacation with Alan, Joan, and Ken. A member of St. Monica parish for nearly 69 years, she was an active member of the seniors’ club and enjoyed the company of her family, friends, and neighbors. As a first-generation Polish-American, Alice was proud of her family’s heritage.
